Grinnell men's soccer team gets offensive against Monmouth

GRINNELL, Iowa - After struggling to score in its previous two outings, the Grinnell College men's soccer team got offensive Wednesday afternoon against Monmouth College.

The Pioneers established season-highs for goals, points and shots while strolling past the Fighting Scots 6-1 at Springer Field. The goal total is the highest for the team since 2021, and the shots total of 29 the highest since 2019.

Grinnell (7-5-5, 2-3-2 Midwest Conference) spread the wealth offensively, as six different players scored goals. Dylan Maddux '25, Oliver Northing '25 and Sam Bayliss '24 all had scores, boosting their team-leading total to four apiece.

Also scoring for Grinnell were Jaxon Willoughby '26, Jimmy Miseda '26 and Soma Suzuki '25.

The Pioneers got on the board just three minutes into the game when Willoughby scored his second goal of the season and sixth in his career. Billy Cherres '26 had the assist, slipping by his defender just inside the left side of the box and firing a perfect cross to Willoughby, who fired it into the net.

Cherres added a second assist just nine minutes later, aiding Suzuki's second goal of the season and third in his career. Cherres again offered a nice pass to the center of the box, which Suzuki drilled into the net.

Grinnell made it 3-0 in the 35th minute as Maddux scored his 11th career goal on an assist by Peter Murphy '25. Maddux took a pass from Murphy and used some fancy footwork and fired a bullet into the bottom right portion of the net.

Northing scored his 10th career goal in the 55th minute and Miseda scored his third goal of the season and fourth in his career in the 80th minute to make it 5-0. Northing rushed the net on his goal and beat the keeper with a perfect shot, while Miseda beat his defender to the ball deep in the box and knocked a shot past the keeper.

Monmouth (3-11-2, 2-4-2 MWC) broke onto the scoreboard with a penalty shot in the 85th minute. With less than a minute to play, Bayliss scored his fifth career goal on Willoughby's assist during a scramble in front of the net.

Samuel Gojjam '27 had four of Grinnell's shots, while Miseda, Anthony Hong '27 and Demi Oni '27 added three apiece.

Pioneer keeper Carter Benson '24 recorded four saves in earning the win.

Grinnell closes out its regular season Saturday against Lawrence University. The Senior Day contest begins at 1:30 p.m. at Springer Field.
