Grinnell men's swimming and diving team sails past Coe in season opener

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's swimming and diving team kicked off its 2023-24 campaign in amazing fashion Friday night, giving new coach Matt Hedman an easy victory in his debut of leading the Pioneers.


Ten Pioneers tasted victory and three entered the program's all-time top 20 list as the hosts raced past Coe College 202-7 at Russell K. Osgood Pool.

Triple champs for Grinnell were Rommin Adl '26, Ethan Yuen '24 and Adam Feilmeyer '25. All three swam on the winning 200-yard medley relay team that had a time of 1 minute, 35.68 seconds. Completing the unit was Harvey Wilhelm '24.

Adl also won the 100 freestyle in 48.07 and joined Feilmeyer, Kevin Fitzgerald '25 and Josh Sutton '24 in winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:28.37. Yuen added wins in the 200 individual medley (1:57.84) and 100 breaststroke (58.39), while Feilmeyer placed first in the 100 backstroke (54.44).

Noah Tsukuda '27 won the 1000 freestyle in 10:04.86, the 10th-best time in program history, and also took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54.67. Fitzgerald won the 200 freestyle (1:49.30), Chris Zhou '27 placed first in the 50 freestyle (23.12) and Theo Mott '24 won the 100 butterfly (53.09). Toby Frick '24 swept the diving events, winning 1-meter with a score of 178.80 and 3-meter with a 187.05.

Individual runners-up for Grinnell were Antoni Stawkiewicz '27 in the 1000 freestyle (10:16.82, which ranks 20th in program history) and 500 freestyle (4:57.98), Keely Yeager '27 in the 200 freestyle (1:51.70) and 100 butterfly (54.82), Sutton in the 50 freestyle (23.47), Benke Grobler '27 in the 200 individual medley (2:02.25) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.80, 20th in program history), Kade Dolphin '24 in the 100 freestyle (50.13) and Alex Petroff '25 in the 100 backstroke (57.53).

Grinnell hosts Iowa Central Community College next Friday night.
