Grinnell wins MWC opener for 5th season in a row by sweeping Beloit netters

BELOIT, Wis. - Grinnell College's volleyball team continued its recent trend of success, winning its Midwest Conference opener for the fifth season in a row with a sweep at Beloit College Tuesday night.

It was a total team effort, as the Pioneers had 14 players see action while stretching their winning streak against the Buccaneers to five matches dating back to 2017. Grinnell won by scores of 25-15, 25-9 and 25-20.

Grinnell hit .306 for the match, the third-best mark this season, including figures of .389 in the first set and .318 in the second. Hayley Taka '26 and Jenna Keller '24 each had nine kills, with Taka hitting .471. Malaina Miles '24, with six kills, hit .600 on the night.

Emily Brewer '24 added 24 assists and Taka contributed a career-best two aces. In the digs department, Sophie Weber '25 had 16 and Keller contributed 11.

Grinnell (8-11, 1-0 MWC) led the first set 11-9 before opening things up with an 8-3 run that included a pair of kills from both Taka and Keller. The Pioneers continued that momentum into the second set, scoring the first 11 points with the aid of Miles' two kills and one apiece from Keira Sullivan '27, Millie Leonard '27 and Taka.

The Pioneers led the third set 15-7 and 19-9 before Beloit (1-12, 0-1 MWC) rallied, coming as close as 22-19. Kills by Brewer and Leonard put Grinnell within match point. After Beloit scored, an attack error by the hosts secured the Pioneers' victory.

Grinnell has its Senior Day this Saturday when Lawrence University visits Darby Gymnasium. The first serve is set for 1 p.m.
