GC women's tennis team punches ticket to MWC Tourney, closes in on another title

GRINNELL, Iowa - On Saturday, Grinnell College's women's tennis team punched its ticket to the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament.

On Sunday, the Pioneers will have the opportunity to clinch the league crown outright.

Grinnell blanked Ripon College and Lawrence University Saturday by 9-0 scores at 10th Avenue Courts, running its winning streak against league foes to 36 matches dating back to the 2018-19 season.     

The Pioneers began the Ripon match with a pair of 8-0 shutouts, those coming from the No. 1 duo of Ioanna Giannakou '24 and Lily Perrin '25 and No. 3 team of Utsah Kalra '25 and Sydney Marin '25. Anika Sheth '26 and Nichole Henning '26 posted an 8-1 decision at the second slot.

Singles winners, in order, were Perrin (6-1, 6-0), Paige Sargent '27 (6-0, 6-2), Kalra (6-1, 6-0), Sheth (6-1, 6-0), Henning (6-1, 6-1) and Marin (6-0, 6-2).

In the Lawrence win, Grinnell again posted 8-0 victories at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles with the duos of Perrin-Sargent and Kalra-Sheth. Giannakou and Henning won 8-4 at the second spot.

In singles, winners were Sargent (6-0, 6-2), Perrin (6-0, 6-3), Kalra (6-1, 6-0), Sheth (6-1, 6-2), Marin (6-1, 6-0) and Nehir Ergun '26 (6-0, 6-1).

Grinnell, 5-0 both overall and in the league, wraps up MWC play Sunday. Action at 10th Avenue Courts begins at 11 a.m.
