Hot-shooting Pioneers pulverize Polars in season opener

SAINT BONIFACIUS, Minn. - Though the Grinnell College women's basketball team hadn't played in more than eight months, nobody would have guessed it by the shooting prowess the team displayed in its season opener Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers shot 56.4 percent from the field, the ninth-best percentage in program history, while pulverizing the Crown College Polars 77-45. Grinnell's shooting percentage is the best for the program since a 2013 contest against Knox College.

Erin Lillis '24 put on a show, scoring 33 points on 14-of-21 shooting. Skylar Thomas '26 and Sara Booher '25 were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Booher was also a force defensively, grabbing eight rebounds and blocking a shot. Lillis, Thomas and Nikki Ware '25 each had five boards. Grace Marsh '25 dished out five assists and Reese Stephens '27 and Ware added two steals apiece.

The 0-2 Polars got on the board first with a 3-pointer, but Ware responded with a jumper and Thomas a 3-pointer to put the Pioneers on top 5-3. A big run a bit later put Grinnell in comfortable command. Leading 11-8, Lillis made a jumper and 3-pointer, Stephens scored on a fast break and Eva Carchidi '24 did the same to make it 20-8.

Grinnell was up 22-10 after the first period and upped its cushion to 33-18 by halftime. Grinnell also outscored Crown 23-16 in the third frame and 21-11 in the fourth.

The Pioneers play their first home game Wednesday when Central College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
