Grinnell men's basketball team off to best start since 2017-18 with victory at Principia

ELSAH, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team is off to its best start since the 2017-18 season after disposing of Principia College 110-102 Saturday afternoon.

The 4-1 Pioneers, who have won both of their road outings this season, were paced by a balanced scoring attack. Kai Te Huki '27 scored 25 points, Jordan Lee '27 had 22 and Gabe Garcia '27 poured in 18. Also in double figures were Sean Murphy '26 with 12 points and Dillon Gestring '25 with 10.

Gesting had six boards to lead Grinnell in that department, while Te Huki, Nick Lundy '27 and Tolu Johnson '25 each grabbed five. Lee added six assists, while Ryan Tarighi '27 and Zach Rosen '26 each came up with two steals.

The teams were tied at 32-all in the first half before Grinnell broke things open with an 11-2 run. Murphy and Max DeGeorge '25 each had treys during the spurt, while Te Huki and John Vincent '26 each added buckets and Garcia a free throw.

Grinnell built its lead to 62-45 by halftime, but Principia (1-3) came back in the second half and climbed within three points at 87-84 with 7:29 left. Murphy and Gestring then stopped the Panthers' rally with consecutive 3-pointers as the Pioneers went on to win by eight.

Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play next Saturday at home against Lake Forest College. Tip-off is 1 p.m. at Darby Gymnasium.
