Quick start propels Grinnell women's basketball team past Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's basketball team got out to a fast start and never looked back as the Pioneers toppled Buena Vista University 79-68 Tuesday night.

The victory snapped Grinnell's five-game losing streak to American Rivers Conference foes, dating back to the 2021-22 campaign when the Pioneers also won at Buena Vista.

Grinnell won its second game over a three-day period while collecting its second-ever victory over the Beavers.

The contest saw the Pioneers tally a season-high for points, as well as 3-pointers with seven.

Sara Booher '25 had a huge game for Grinnell, posting her second double-double of the season as she had a career-high 16 points to go with 12 rebounds. Booher's strong all-around play also resulted in three blocks and two steals.

Nikki Ware '25 tallied 19 points and two steals for the Pioneers, Erin Lillis '24 had 15 points and two steals and Eva Carchidi '24 came up with 11 points. Skylar Thomas '26 and Reese Stephens '27 each had three assists.

The teams traded baskets to open the game, but then the Pioneers pulled away with seven unanswered points. Booher had a layup and free throw, Ware converted a layup and Booher scored again to make it 9-2 with 5:28 to go in the opening quarter.

The Pioneers led 22-16 after one period and maintained control the rest of the half. After building a nine-point lead, the hosts rallied with four consecutive points to climb within 36-31. However, Lillis nailed a jumper a few seconds before the buzzer to send Grinnell into the locker room with a 38-31 edge.

Buena Vista scored immediately in the second half, but Booher and Lillis countered with baskets to make it a 42-33 lead for the visitors. After the Beavers got two free throws, Grinnell gained its first double-digit lead with the aid of a six-point run. Ware made two free throws and a layup, and Carchidi also converted a layup as Grinnell went ahead 48-35 with 6:47 left in the third period.

The Pioneers never let the margin get to single digits again, gradually pulling away for a pair of 17-point leads. The last of those was when two free throws by Bailey Strovers '27 made it 59-42 entering the final frame.

Grinnell cruised from there to improve to 3-2 while the hosts dipped to 1-2.

Booher moved up to eighth on Grinnell's career blocked shots list during the game, boosting her total to 54. Lillis improved to 14th on the Pioneers' all-time scoring chart with 871 points.

The Pioneers open Midwest Conference play Saturday when Lake Forest College visits Darby Gymnasium for a 3 p.m. test.
