GC men's swimming and diving team shatters pair of meet records at Pioneer Classic

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's swimming and diving team kicked off the Pioneer Classic in stellar fashion Friday, posting two meet records at Russell K. Osgood Pool.

Kevin Fitzgerald '25 had a hand in both marks, setting those in the 500-yard freestyle and as part of the 400 medley relay with Harvey Wilhelm '24, Ethan Yuen '24 and Rommin Adl '26.

The medley team's winning clocking of 3 minutes, 23.53 seconds shattered the previous mark of 3:27.06 set by Gustavus Adolphus College in 2021. That time is second in program history.

Fitzgerald won the 500 freestyle in 4:39.15, beating the 11-year-old record of 4:43.46 by Matt Luton of William Jewell College.

Grinnell had two other victories on the night. Adam Feilmeyer '25, Yuen, Kade Dolphin '24 and Adl teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:24.58 and Yuen was also victorious in the 200 individual medley in 1:54.34. The relay team's time is second in program history, while Yuen's time is third.

Placing third for Grinnell were Noah Tsukuda '27 in the 500 freestyle (4:43.32, ninth in program history), Theo Mott '24 in the 200 individual medley (1:57.02, 10th in program history) and Adl in the 50 freestyle (21.35).

Fourth-place finishers were Antoni Staszkiewicz '27 in the 500 freestyle (4:51.79), Benke Grobler '27 in the 200 individual medley (1:57.23) and Feilmeyer in the 50 freestyle (21.56). Grobler's time ranks 12th in program history.

Keely Yeager '27 was fifth in the 200 individual medley in 1:57.38, which is 13th in program history. Dolphin finished sixth in the 50 freestyle in 21.98 and Josh Sutton '24 was eighth with a time of 22.09.

Diving was also contested Friday night but scores were still being counted.

The meet continues at 9 a.m. Saturday.
