School, meet records tumble as Grinnell men enjoy spectacular 2nd day at Pioneer Classic

GRINNELL, Iowa - The record book took quite a beating as the Grinnell College men's swimming and diving team recorded a stellar performance on the final day of the Pioneer Classic Saturday.


Ethan Yuen '24 set two school records and several more meet records were established by the Pioneers at Russell K. Osgood Pool.

Yuen's school and meet records came in the 100- and 200-yard butterflies with times of 49.37 seconds and 1:51.74, respectively. He broke his own school mark of 49.74, set last year, in the 100 and topped Mitch Sevier's record of 1:53.11 in the 200. Sevier's record was in 2020.

Grinnell's other individual meet records came in victories by Kevin Fitzgerald '25 in the 400 individual medley (4:05.61, which ranks sixth all-time at Grinnell), Noah Tsukuda '27 in the 1650 freestyle (16:20.78, third all-time at Grinnell), Rommin Adl '26 in the 100 freestyle (46.29) and Benke Grobler '27 in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.96, sixth all-time at Grinnell).

The Pioneers also established meet records in the 200 medley, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle relays. Adl, Harvey Wilhelm '24, Yuen and Fitzgerald swam 1:32.70 in the 200 medley, while Yuen, Adam Feilmeyer '25, Fitzgerald and Adl went 3:06.08 in the 400 freestyle. Those times are fourth and second in program history, respectively. The 800 freestyle team, which consisted of Adl, Yuen, Tsukuda and Fitzgerald, swam 6:58.04 which is seventh all-time at Grinnell.

Other Grinnell champs were Adl in the 100 backstroke (51.14) and Fitzgerald in the 200 backstroke (1:53.10).

Runners-up for Grinnell were Theo Mott '24 in the 100 butterfly (51.28, fourth all-time), Tsukuda in the 200 freestyle (1:44.83, 19th), Yuen in the 100 breaststroke (57.50), Feilmeyer in the 100 backstroke (52.46), Cooper Malone '25 in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.49) and Antoni Staszkiewicz '27 in the 200 butterfly (1:55.60, seventh).

Grobler was third in the 400 individual medley and 100 breaststroke with times of 4:12.77 and 58.34. Those clockings rank 12th and 10th all-time at Grinnell. Also placing third were Fitzgerald in the 1650 freestyle (16:35.84), Noah Siegmeier '24 in the 200 backstroke (2:01.25), Feilmeyer in the 100 freestyle (47.75) and Keely Yeager '27 in the 200 butterfly (1:57.33, 10th all-time).

Placing fourth were Staszkiewicz in the 400 individual medley (4:14.56, 14th) and 1650 freestyle (16:49.52, 11th), Yeager in the 100 butterfly (52.32, 11th), Kade Dolphin '24 in the 200 freestyle (1:48.20) and 100 freestyle (48.47) and Toby Frick '24 in 1- and 3-meter diving (350.10 and 334.55).

Placing fifth were Malone in the 400 individual medley (4:19.77), Aidan Choate '25 in the 100 butterfly (53.26), Alex Petroff '25 in the 100 and 200 backstroke (54.52 and 2:05.12) and Wilhelm in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.58).

Also for Grinnell, Yeager swam the 13th-best 100 breaststroke in program history with a time of 59.29 and Chris Zhou '27 had the 19th-best time in 1:00.35.

Grinnell was second in the team standings with 1517.5 points, finishing only behind Gustavus Adolphus College's total of 1946.5.
