GC women's basketball team loses tough battle against Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa - In an epic battle of Midwest Conference unbeatens, Lawrence University clipped the Grinnell College basketball team 62-58 Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell, 2-1 in the league and 5-3 in all games, got 15 points from Erin Lillis '24, 12 from Sara Booher '25 and 10 from Bailey Strovers '27. Booher grabbed eight rebounds, as well, and Grace Marsh '25 added seven boards. 

In the assists department, Lillis had five and also garnered three steals. Booher blocked four shots.

Grinnell jumped out to a 16-15 lead by the end of the first period, but Lawrence responded to go up 33-32 by halftime. Lawrence, 2-0 in the MWC and 6-1 in all games, pushed ahead 51-48 by the end of three quarters.

The Vikings built an eight-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but Grinnell refused to fold. Lillis had a layup and two free throws to close within 58-54. The teams then traded baskets before Strovers sank two free throws with 2:40 left to close the gap to 60-58.

Both teams had chances at baskets down the stretch, but the defenses were up to the task. The Vikings secured the win with two free throws with 5 seconds left.

Grinnell is back home again Wednesday when Cornell College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
