Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Stellar 2nd half pushes Grinnell women's basketball team past Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa - Putting together one of its finest halves of basketball in recent history, the Grinnell College women's squad rallied to knock off Cornell College 75-65 in a key Midwest Conference contest Wednesday at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers scorched the nets with 11-of-24 shooting from 3-point range, with the 45.8 percent success rate ranking seventh in program history. Carolyn Pierce '27 led the shooting charge, making 5-of-6 treys for 83.3 percent. That mark is tied for sixth in program history.

Grinnell, at 6-3 overall, is off to its best start since the 2003-04 season. The Pioneers are 3-1 in the MWC, their best mark in league play since 2016-17.

Erin Lillis '24 led Grinnell with 19 points, while Pierce had a career-best 15. Sara Booher '25 posted yet another double-double, scoring 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting while grabbing 10 rebounds. She also blocked three shots.

Bailey Strovers '27 added nine boards and a career-best two steals, while Nikki Ware '25 had a career-high five assists.

Cornell, 3-5 overall and 2-1 in the MWC, led 15-11 after one period and 30-23 at halftime. But then it was all Grinnell. After shooting 30.7 percent from the field in the first quarter and 41.7 percent in the second frame, Grinnell hit 62.5 percent of its shots in the third frame while putting up 25 points.

The Rams went up by eight midway through the quarter and still led by seven before the Pioneers closed with a flurry. Consecutive treys by Pierce and a jumper from Booher pushed Grinnell ahead 48-47 entering the final frame.

Grinnell kept it up in the fourth period, hitting 58.3 percent of its field goal tries. Pierce pushed the lead as big as 10 with a 3-pointer at the 3:18 mark. After Cornell closed within three points with 1:30 left, Skylar Thomas '26 and Lillis each made free throws and Ware made two more to secure the seven-point victory.

The Pioneers close out their pre-holiday schedule Sunday when the College of Saint Benedict visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
