ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Facing an unbeaten foe that is receiving votes for the D3hoops.com national rankings, the Grinnell College women's basketball team more than held its own Friday on the opening day of the St. Petersburg Classic.

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 10-0 on the season, led by just seven points at halftime before pulling away late for a 67-48 victory over the Pioneers in the two-day Florida event hosted by Eckerd College.

Sara Booher '25 continued her impressive season for Grinnell, 7-4 on the season, with a game-high 13 points to go along with eight rebounds. She also swatted away four Pointer shots, pushing her career total to 72 blocks. That figure ranks fifth in program history.

Erin Lillis '24 added 10 points for Grinnell as she inched closer to the 1,000-point milestone for her career. She moved up to 11th on the Pioneers' all-time chart with 961.

Nikki Ware '25 added eight points, hitting 2-of-3 shots from 3-point land. She now has 76 treys, which ranks 10th in Grinnell history. Lillis added five assists and Ware a pair of steals.

Grinnell stormed out to a 6-3 lead, with Booher providing two buckets and Ware one. The Pointers rallied to lead 15-13 after the first period.

Grinnell remained close the entire second period, once building a three-point lead on a trey by Eva Carchidi '24 and layup from Lillis to make it 22-19 with 6:37 left. UW-Stevens Point gradually came back, though, and was up 34-27 at intermission.

The Pointers opened the third period with a flurry, going ahead by 10 before Bailey Strovers '27 sliced the gap to seven with a trey. UW-Stevens Point responded to go ahead 50-37 entering the final stanza and led by double digits the rest of the way.

Grinnell finishes up the event at 5 p.m. Eastern time Saturday against Keene State College.
