Records tumble as Grinnell men bolt out to early lead at MWC Championships

Results

GRINNELL, Iowa – Records are made to be broken, a fact Grinnell College's men's swimming and diving team proved time and again Friday night.

The Pioneers shattered two Midwest Conference, MWC Championships and school records while bolting out to the team lead after the first day of the league championship meet at Russell K. Osgood Pool.

The records came in wins by the 200-yard freestyle relay team and 400 medley relay squad. The freestyle unit of Adam Feilmeyer '25, Luke Klein-Collins '23, Ethan Yuen '24 and Rommin Adl '26 swam 1:23.86, toppling the league overall and championships mark of 1:24.25 set in 2017 and school record of 1:24.85 established 18 years ago.

Yuen was also on the medley relay team that won in 3:22.56, shattering the MWC overall and championships record as well as school record of 3:24.68 set by Grinnell in 2013. Rounding out that quartet were Sean Colson '26, Bert Wang '23 and Kevin Fitzgerald '25.

Fitzgerald also breezed to victory in the 500 freestyle with a time 4:34.59, giving him that title for the second year in a row. Fitzgerald and Yuen now have five MWC crowns each in their careers, while Feilmeyer, Klein-Collins and Wang have two apiece.

Grinnell has 285 points after the first day, well ahead of runner-up St. Norbert College's total of 198.

Grinnell had one more school record on the day, that coming from Adl in the 50 freestyle. His clocking of 20.95 in the prelims outpaced Max Fulgoni's previous mark of 21.20 in 2011. Adl swam 20.98 in the finals, good for second place.

Also placing second were Ben Johnson '23 in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:54.39, which is third in program history, and Sam Heller '23 in 3-meter diving with a score of 376.15. That ranks 12th all-time at Grinnell.

Colson swam 21.10 in the 50 freestyle finals, which also eclipsed the previous school record, while finishing third. Diego Rodrigues '25 was third in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.08, which ranks seventh in program history.

Enrique Valero Ying '23 was fourth in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.13 and Jacob Lester '25 placed fifth in the 500 freestyle in 4:44.96, which is 11th in program history. Placing sixth were Theo Mott '24 in the 200 individual medley (1:57.75, 15th in GC history), Feilmeyer in the 50 freestyle (21.42) and Sam Larsen '25 in the 500 freestyle (4:47.38, 15th in GC history).

Ian Johnson '23 was seventh in the 500 freestyle in 4:47.46, which ranks 16th in program history. Klein-Collins swam 21.70 in the finals of the 50 free to place eighth after going 21.57 in the prelims, which ranks 15th all-time.

The meet continues at 10 a.m. Saturday.
