Grinnell men's basketball team falls in thrill-a-minute overtime battle

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's basketball team may have lost its regular-season finale, but the Pioneers certainly gave the jam-packed crowd at Darby Gymnasium plenty of excitement.
 
The Pioneers battled back and forth with Lake Forest College in a thrill-a-minute game before falling 121-120 on Saturday.
 
Dean Mazlish '23 celebrated Senior Day with career-highs of 17 points and six rebounds for Grinnell (8-16, 4-12 Midwest Conference). Zach Rosen '26 was lights-out from 3-point land, hitting 5-of-7 shots from beyond the arc while tallying a career-best 15 points.
 
Adam Phillips '23 and Moze Thurmgreene '23 each had 12 points, Aiden Gilbert '23, Mitch Priest '25 and David Bluder '25 scored 11 apiece and Brady Vest '23 had 10.
 
Mazlish also dished out seven assists, grabbed seven boards and came up with two steals. Vest and Rosen also had two steals each.
 
Lake Forest (11-14, 8-8 MWC) led 58-56 at halftime and the teams were close in the second half before Grinnell opened a 102-94 lead with 4:35 left. The Foresters followed with a 10-0 run to go up 104-102 with 3:21 left.
 
Mazlish then drained a 3-pointer to put the Pioneers back up top before Lake Forest countered with four free throws for a 108-105 lead.
 
Vest then stepped to the forefront, hitting a jumper and 3-pointer on consecutive possessions to make it 110-108. However, Lake Forest scored with 7 ticks on the clock to force overtime.
 
Phillips and Priest opened the extra period with treys, but Lake Forest charged back and took its only lead with 15 seconds left. Grinnell was unable to get shot off as the Foresters held on for the win.
