Grinnell rally comes up short in MWC setback to Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - A huge comeback by the Grinnell College women's basketball team came up just short Saturday afternoon as Monmouth College eked out a 54-49 win in Midwest Conference play.

Grinnell (8-12, 5-8 MWC) trailed by 10 early in the final period and was still down by nine at the 8:24 mark before its big rally. A layup and 3-pointer by Nikki Ware '25 plus free throw from Skylar Thomas '26 brought the visitors within 47-44 at the 4:06 mark.

After Monmouth (10-12, 6-7 MWC) went on a mini 4-2 run, Eva Carchidi '24 drained a 3-pointer that brought Grinnell within 51-49 at the 2:22 mark.

That's as close as the Pioneers would get, though. Despite holding Monmouth to a lone basket and free throw down the stretch, Grinnell missed four shots of its own.

Grinnell bolted out to a 7-4 lead to start the game, but the Fighting Scots answered and were up 12-9 at the conclusion of the first period, 25-19 at halftime and 43-36 after three quarters.

Erin Lillis '24 led the Pioneers with 15 points, while Carchidi had nine with the aid of 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point land. Sara Booher '25 grabbed 11 rebounds and Carchidi added a career-best five. Lillis also had three assists and a steal, and Ware contributed a steal, as well.

Grinnell has another big test Wednesday against Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill. Action begins at 5:30 p.m.
