Grinnell baseball team comes up big to shut down UW-Platteville

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Grinnell College's baseball team combined big-time hitting, strong pitching and errorless defense to snap a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 shutout over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Monday.

Three Grinnell pitchers combined on a three-hitter. Starter Alex Love '23 tossed two-hit ball over six innings and struck out five, and Matthew Nakamoto '25 gave up just one hit and fanned three batters in earning the win. Jakob Runkel '26 worked a hitless final inning.

Grinnell managed seven hits, with Luke Porter '23 and Sean Tashjian '25 getting two apiece.

The game was scoreless through seven innings before Grinnell got all the offense it needed in the eighth when Tashjian's RBI double scored Lucas Hadding '24.

The Pioneers got some insurance in the ninth when Mac McCain '25 knocked in two runs with a triple, Porter came up with an RBI single and Tashjian plated another run with a single.

Both teams are 3-5 on the season. Grinnell takes on nationally-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Tuesday.
