GC softball team loses pair of games to pair of highly-touted foes

CLERMONT, Fla. - Grinnell College's softball team put up a great fight against two highly-regarded foes, but ended up on the short end of the scoreboard both times Thursday at Legends Way.

Grinnell lost a 5-3 decision to St. Olaf College to begin the day, and then fell 4-2 to a once-beaten University of Wisconsin-Whitewater squad.

Grinnell hung tight with St. Olaf despite being outhit 9-3. Starter Maddy O'Bryan '24 was the pitcher of record, striking out one in four innings. Christin Hartman '24 fanned one over the final three innings.

Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 had two of Grinnell's three hits. St. Olaf scored twice in the second inning and again in the third for a 3-0 lead. The Pioneers closed the gap in the third when Amanda Ramirez '23 scored on a wild pitch and DiGiacomo-Zahller knocked in a run with a single down the left-field line.

Each team scored a run in the fourth, with Grinnell's coming on Durak's bases-loaded walk. The Oles got an insurance run in the seventh inning.

Hartman pitched six-hit ball and struck out one  for Grinnell (7-5) through five innings of work against UW-Whitewater and Kathryn Vermeulen '24 finished off the contest.

UW-Whitewater jumped on top 2-0 in the first inning, but Alexa Okada '24 hit a two-run single to tie things up. The Warhawks got solo runs in the third and sixth frames.

During the day, Chu hit a double to bring her career total to 25, which ranks fifth in program history. Okada is up to 33 career walks, 10th all-time at Grinnell.

The Pioneers finish off their spring break trip Friday with games against Middlebury College and Buffalo State.
