Grinnell softball team finishes up spring break trip on resounding note

CLERMONT, Fla. - Grinnell College's softball team wrapped up its spring break trip on a resounding note Friday, toppling both Middlebury College and Buffalo State University at Legends Way.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 tossed her first collegiate shutout in an 8-0, six-inning victory over Middlebury in which she fired a one-hitter. The lone hit by Middlebury was a fifth-inning leadoff double.

Vermeulen struck out four batters and was aided by a Pioneer offense that mustered 13 hits including three from Amanda Ramirez '23 and two each by Alexa Okada '24, Emma Nelson '23, Mary Webb '23 and Kambria Anson '24.

Grinnell got all the offense it needed in the second inning when Anson's infield single plated a run. In the third, Samantha Chu '24 knocked in a run with a groundout and Ramirez added a three-run double down the left-field line in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.

Grinnell tacked on three more runs in the sixth as Ramirez had an infield RBI single, Chu forced in a run with a single to right and Ramirez scored via an error.

Grinnell (9-5) followed with a 7-1 win over Buffalo State. Ramirez sparked the Pioneers' 11-hit attack with three hits, while Taylor Durak '24 added two.

The Pioneers scratched out solo runs in the first and second frames on Jasmine Oda's '24 RBI single up the middle and Hannah Dykstra's '24 run-scoring double to left-center.
Buffalo State cut the lead in half in the third, but Grinnell got a run back in the fifth when Ramirez scored on an error.

In the sixth, Ramirez had an RBI double down the left-field line and Durak blasted a three-run homer to left.

Winning pitcher Christin Hartman '24 gave up seven hits and struck out two.

Several Grinnell players continued to inch their way up the Pioneers' career-leading list during the day. Ramirez now ranks seventh in career triples with six, Chu is seventh in RBIs with 58 and Vermeulen collected her 17th win, which also ranks seventh.

The Pioneers now return to Iowa and play at nationally-ranked Central College Tuesday.
