Grinnell bounces back in 2nd game to nearly trip up nationally-ranked Central

PELLA, Iowa - After losing to nationally-ranked Central College in the opener of Tuesday's softball doubleheader, Grinnell College came back with a vengeance.

The Pioneers led the 19th-ranked Dutch by a run entering the bottom of the seventh of the second game before the hosts recorded a walkoff two-run double to secure the 6-5 win.

Grinnell (9-7) outhit Central 11-9 in the game and played errorless ball after committing six fielding miscues in the opener.

Taylor Durak '24 and Hannah Dykstra '25 each had three hits in the second game, while Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 and Kambria Anson '24 added two each.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 worked a complete game in the pitching circle. She struck out three.

Central (17-3) opened the scoring in the second inning, but Grinnell went ahead 3-1 in the third on a two-run double to left-center by Durak and RBI single to left by Dykstra. The Dutch retook the lead at 4-3 in the fourth, but again Grinnell bounced back with a two-run sixth inning. Alexa Okada '24 hit an RBI double to right in the frame and Durak plated a run with a single to left.

Central secured the win in the bottom of the seventh with consecutive singles and a two-run double.

The Dutch won the opener 15-1 in five innings with the aid of 17 hits. Grinnell managed four hits, including two by Durak. Grinnell got its run in the opening inning on Samantha Chu's '24 RBI double to center.

Christin Hartman '24 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

Chu continued to move up Grinnell's career list in two categories. She now has 26 doubles, fourth all-time at Grinnell, and her 59 RBIs rank sixth.

The Pioneers open Midwest Conference play Saturday when Monmouth College visits Grinnell for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
