Grinnell softball team off to best MWC start in program history with sweep of Lake Forest

GRINNELL, Iowa - History was made Saturday during Grinnell College's softball sweep of Lake Forest College at the Softball Complex.

The Pioneers secured their best Midwest Conference start in program history with the 7-6 and 3-0 victories over the Foresters. The sweep, only Grinnell's second of Lake Forest all-time (the other came in 1998), moved the hosts to 6-0 in the league and 16-10 overall.

The second-game victory marked just the third time Grinnell shut out Lake Forest and the first time holding the Foresters scoreless since 2018. It was also Pioneer pitcher Christin Hartman's '24 first collegiate shutout.

Grinnell rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win the opener. Samantha Chu '24 had two of Grinnell's six hits, and winning pitcher Kathryn Vermeulen '24 struck out two batters in six innings. She now has 20 career victories, fourth-best at Grinnell. Lane Kohler '25 earned the Pioneers' second save of the season by throwing the final inning while moving up to second on Grinnell's career list with three saves.

Grinnell took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Chu's two-run double down the left-field line. Lake Forest, 2-4 in the MWC and 12-10 overall, tied the game in the second inning and went up 4-2 in the fifth.

The Pioneers erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Amanda Ramirez '23 beginning the spurt with an RBI double to left-center. Lizzy Vermeulen '24 walked with the bases loaded, Emma Nelson '23 knocked in a run and Jasmine Oda '25 came up with a clutch two-run single through the right side.

Grinnell broke open a scoreless second game with two runs in the fourth inning, those coming on a two-run double through the left side by Ramirez. Grinnell added a run in the fifth on Alexa Okada's '24 RBI.

Hartman was sharp in a complete-game pitching effort, striking out three and giving up just two hits.

The Pioneers were slated to host Beloit College Sunday, but those games got postponed due to forecasted inclement weather.
