Grinnell softball team posts 2 more shutouts while staying perfect in MWC play

APPLETON, Wis. - Shutouts have become a common theme lately for the Grinnell College softball team.

The Pioneers, fresh off shutting out Lake Forest College in the second game of a doubleheader last weekend, did the same to Lawrence University in both ends of a twin bill Saturday. The 9-0 and 3-0 victories over the Vikings kept Grinnell's mark unblemished in Midwest Conference play at 8-0 while improving to 18-10 overall.

In the opener, Christin Hartman '24 recorded her second shutout in as many outings while tossing a five-hitter. She didn't issue a walk and struck out five batters, while Emma Nelson '23 sparked the Grinnell bats with three hits.

Grinnell got all the offense it needed in the first inning on Taylor Durak's '24 two-run double to right-center field. Grinnell made it 3-0 in the fourth on Alexa Okada's '24 sacrifice fly to left and went up 4-0 in the fifth when Amanda Ramirez '23 knocked another sacrifice fly to left.

The Pioneers got some breathing room in the sixth with a three-run outburst. Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 had a two-run double down the left-field line and Ramirez added an RBI single down the left-field line. In the seventh, Mary Webb '23 plated a run with a double down the left-field line and Kambriai Anson '24 added an infield RBI single.

In the second game, Maddy O'Bryan '24 and Kathryn Vermeulen '24 combined for a five-hit shutout. O'Bryan got the win, tossing five innings, and Vermeulen went the final two to get the save while also striking out a batter.

Samantha Chu '24 led the Pioneers' offense with two hits. Grinnell broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning when Jasmine Oda '25 walked with the bases loaded, Hannah Dykstra '25 lifted a sacrifice fly to left and Kyra Killion '24 pushed across a run when reaching on an error.

During the day, Ramirez moved up to third on Grinnell's career list for sacrifice flies with four and Anson moved into third for career stolen bases with 26. Durak is now fifth for runs batted in with 64 and Okada eighth for career walks with 38.

Grinnell entertains Beloit College in a MWC doubleheader Sunday, starting at noon.
