Grinnell baseball team picks up pair of key victories at IC

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Although it may be a bit early to be eying a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament, the Grinnell College baseball team delivered nonetheless by sweeping Illinois College Saturday afternoon.

On a day when Mac McCain '25 tied a school record for doubles in a game, the Pioneers reeled off victories of 7-5 and 9-2 over the Blueboys. That pushed Grinnell to 9-7 in the MWC and 12-15 overall while extending its winning streak to three games.

McCain had three doubles in the opener to tie a school mark. The Pioneers trailed 5-3 in the late going before scoring once in the eighth inning on Sean Richardson's '24 RBI groundout. Grinnell took the lead for good with a three-run outburst in the ninth on Nate L'Esperance's '23 bases-clearing double to left field.

Carter Shedd '25 got the pitching win with an inning of hitless relief in the eighth inning, and Ian Feld '25 tossed a hitless ninth to earn his second save of the season. Feld has three career saves, 10th all-time at Grinnell.

Grinnell broke out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Luke Porter's '23 two-run homer to left, and added another run in the fifth on Ethan Crawford's '25 RBI infield single.

The Pioneers rode a three-homer attack in the second game. Nikolas Ruden '26 had an RBI single to center in the first as the teams traded runs, and Porter's two-run shot to right field in the third gave Grinnell a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

L'Esperance legged out an inside-the-park homer in the sixth, and Crawford blasted a three-run homer to center in the seventh. L'Esperance added a sacrifice fly to left in the seventh and Porter had an RBI double to left in the eighth.

Augie Ros '25 was the winning pitcher with 2.2 innings of three-hit relief.

Porter now has 11 homers this season, one off the school record, and his 17 career round-trippers rank fourth all-time. He also has 13 doubles this season (seventh all-time) and 85 total bases (ninth). 

The teams meet for one game Sunday.
