Grinnell men's tennis team extends NCAA Tourney qualifying streak to 16 with shutouts Friday

PEORIA, Ill. - Different year, but a very familiar result.

Grinnell College's men's tennis team punched its ticket to the NCAA Division III National Tournament for the 16th year in a row Friday afternoon by blanking Lake Forest College 5-0 in the Midwest Conference Tourney title match.

The victory stretched Grinnell's winning streak against league foes to 180, dating back to the 2002-03 season. Additionally, Grinnell has posted shutouts in 27 of its last 30 matches against MWC opponents.

Grinnell opened the match with Lake Forest by sweeping doubles with the duos of Leo Esztergomi '24-Aiden Klass '25 (8-6), Deuce Daniel '26-Sam Rudenberg '25 (8-2) and Karch Knoll '25-Lucas Willett '26 (8-3).

The Pioneers, who improved to 17-7, finished off the victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win by Willett at No. 4 singles and 6-2, 6-4 decision by Rudenberg at No. 5.

Grinnell advanced to the title match with a 5-0 blanking of Ripon College. Doubles wins came from the duos of Esztergomi-Klass (8-5), Rudenberg-Daniel (8-1) and Knoll-Willett (8-0). 

In singles, Wilder Cooke '25 won 6-1, 6-0 at the second spot and Spencer Skidmore '24 posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 4.

The MWC Tourney continues Saturday and Sunday with individual play.
