Grinnell baseball team wraps up record-breaking season at MWC Tournament

BELOIT, Wis. - Grinnell College wrapped up its record-breaking 2023 campaign Saturday, falling 5-1 to Ripon College in the Midwest Conference Tournament.

Most of the contest had been played Friday before action was suspended due to rain.

Grinnell established eight school records on the season, including team marks for home runs (50), strikeouts by pitchers (296) and putouts (974). Slugger Luke Porter '24 finished as the Grinnell season leader in home runs (16), hits (60), total bases (128) and at-bats (152). Cole Philpott '25 set the season records for walks with 32.

Josh Fournier '24 had two of Grinnell's five hits against Ripon. The teams were tied 1-all after one inning, with Grinnell's coming from an RBI double to right-center by Porter. Ripon scored two runs in both the third and fifth frames.

Others getting hits for Grinnell besides Fournier and Porter were Mac McCain '25 and Sean Richardson '24.

Matthew Nakamoto '25 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell, striking out seven in eight innings.

Grinnell finishes its campaign with an 18-21 mark.
