Making history: GC softball team wins first-ever Midwest Conference title

RIPON, Wis. - In its 46-year history, Grinnell College's softball program had never won a Midwest Conference title.

That all changed Saturday when the Pioneers swept Ripon College to claim a share of the league crown with Illinois College. At 15-1 in the MWC and 26-12 in all games, Grinnell set school records for league and overall victories in a season.

Grinnell will be the second seed in next weekend's MWC Tourney, as Illinois College earned the top seed and hosting rights via the tie-breaker.

Both of Saturday's victories were by the mercy rule, 9-1 in the opener and 9-0 in the second game. Both contests went just five innings.

In the opener, Mary Webb '23 sparked the offense by going 3-for-3 at the plate. Kathryn Vermeulen '24 had a complete-game pitching win, giving up nine hits and striking out five.

The Pioneers got all the runs they needed in the first inning as Lizzy Vermeulen '24 and Webb each had RBI singles and Emma Nelson '23 a bases-loaded walk.

Ripon (5-11 MWC, 13-23) scored in the third inning, but Grinnell bounced back with three runs in the fourth as Kambria Anson '24 hit a two-run single and Taylor Durak '24 plated another run with a single. In the fifth, Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 had a sacrifice fly and Anson a two-run double.

Amanda Ramirez '23 and Anson each had three hits in the second game and Christin Hartman '24 threw a five-hitter while striking out five.

Samantha Chu '24 had an RBI in the first inning and Sofia DiCarlo '25 added a sacrifice fly. Kyra Killion '24 hit an RBI double, Ramirez added a two-run double and Anson plated a run with a single in the third to make it 6-0.

Hannah Dykstra '25 and Alexa Okada '24 had RBIs in the fourth inning, and Chu an RBI double in the fifth. Chu now has 176 total bases in her career, fifth all-time at Grinnell.

Grinnell takes on Lake Forest College at 10 a.m. Friday in the opening round of the MWC Tourney in Jacksonville, Ill.
