GC volleyball team topples pair of foes to open 2023 campaign

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's volleyball team kicked off its own tournament Friday night in thrilling fashion, toppling Bethany Lutheran College in five sets and then defeating Dominican University in four at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell won a nail-biter in the opener, tripping Bethany Lutheran College 25-19, 16-25, 27-29, 25-13 and 15-10.
 
Grinnell got a solid one-two punch from Hayley Taka '26 and Nicole Mlynski '26 with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Emily Brewer '24 had 20 assists, while Emmy Nyquist '24 served five of the Pioneers' 14 aces and Brewer contributed three.
 
The Pioneers tallied 84 digs, with Nyquist coming up with 16, Brewer adding 15, Gabby Choy '26 getting 13, Sophie Weber '25 earning 11 and Taka tallying 10. Kylie Snell '26 had three total blocks.
 
After taking the first set, Bethany Lutheran rolled back to win the next two. Grinnell staved off elimination, though, taking the fourth set comfortably thanks to an 8-1 run.
 
In the fifth set, the Pioneers opened leads of 4-0 and 6-1. Bethany Lutheran came within one point a few times before Grinnell scored two of the next three points. Later, leading 12-10, an attack error by the visitors as well as kills from Taka and Mlynski closed out the win.
 
Grinnell followed with come-from-behind 17-25, 27-25, 25-15 and 25-16 over Dominican.

Jenna Keller '24 had 14 kills for Grinnnell and Millie Leonard '27 and Keira Sullivan '27 had 10 each. Brewer and Kylie-Ann Smith '27 added 22 assists.

Keller and Brewer had four aces, while Brewer led the team in digs with 26. Nyquist and Smith added 13 and 12 digs.

The tourney continues on Saturday at 11 a.m.
