GRINNELL, Iowa – After losing a nail-biter in the first set, Grinnell College's volleyball squad came back with a fury in the second against Wartburg College Tuesday night.
But the Pioneers couldn't continue that momentum, losing in four sets to the Knights at Darby Gymnasium. Set scores, in favor of the visitors, were 26-24, 18-25, 25-15 and 25-19.
Sophie Weber '25 registered 32 digs on the night, the sixth-most at Grinnell for a four-set match.
Jenna Keller '24 added 14 digs and 12 kills, while
Emmy Nyquist '24 had 11 digs and
Emily Brewer '24 and
Kylie-Ann Smith '27 added 10 each.
Hayley Taka '26 had 12 kills and hit .306 for the Pioneers and
Keira Sullivan '27 contributed 11 kills. Brewer and Smith each had 17 assists and two aces, while
Nicole Mlynski '26 tallied three blocks.
Wartburg (3-6) bolted out to a big lead in the first set and then hung on to win by two. Grinnell (4-5) returned the favor in the second set, rallying from an 11-10 deficit with a six-point run that included two kills by Keller and another by Sullivan. Grinnell rolled from there to tie things at 1-set apiece, but the Knights regained momentum to win the final two sets.
Grinnell is at the Augustana College Tournament in Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday.
