Blistering hitting performance propels GC volleyball team to sweep of Rose-Hulman; Sullivan named to All-Tourney Team

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - In need of a victory, the Grinnell College volleyball team delivered Saturday with one of its best hitting performances in program history.

Grinnell snapped a five-match losing streak in its second match at the Augustana Tournament Saturday, hitting a blistering .415 in a three-set victory over Rose-Hulman Institute. That figure ranks fifth in program history and is the best hitting efficiency for the Pioneers since 2016.

Grinnell, 5-6 on the season, pounded down 44 kills in the 25-10, 25-23, 26-24 victory. The Pioneers had just five attack errors in the match on 94 swings.

Individually, All-Tournament Team selection Keira Sullivan '27 ripped 18 kills and Jenna Keller '24 added 16 while hitting .531 and 538, respectively. Millie Leonard '27 hit at a .545 clip.

Emily Brewer '24 distributed 36 assists and Gabby Choy '26 added four aces. Keller, Brewer and Sophie Weber '25 each had 12 digs.

After winning the first set convincingly, the Pioneers broke away from a 23-all tie in the second set to win thanks to two kills by Sullivan. Rose-Hulman shot out to a 6-0 lead in the third set, but the Pioneers gradually chipped away and eventually tied it at 23-all on Brewer's kills.

Rose-Hulman got to set point but Sullivan and Keller registered kills and Keller contributed a block to secure the win for Grinnell.

Earlier in the day, Grinnell lost a 25-16, 25-21, 25-20 decision to Adrian College. Leonard and Sullivan each had nine kills, Kylie-Ann Smith '27 had 14 assists and Brewer tallied 11 assists. Weber and Keller added 17 and 14 digs, respectively.

Grinnell heads to Pella Tuesday to play Central College. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
