Grinnell collects first win at Central College since 1977 with 4-set decision

PELLA, Iowa - Central College entered Tuesday's match with just one loss, but that total was doubled thanks to the Grinnell College volleyball team.

The Pioneers worked past the Dutch in four sets in non-conference action to improve to 6-6 on the season, snapping a 12-match losing streak at Central going back to 1977. Central fell to 10-2 with the setback.

The teams split the opening two sets, with Grinnell taking the first 25-23 before the Dutch won by the same score in the second. But after that it was all Pioneers, as they rolled to victories of 25-20 and 25-16.

Three Pioneers had double-digit kills, with Keira Sullivan '27 tallying 15, Millie Leonard '27 coming up with 13 and Hayley Taka '26 pounding down 12. Leonard also hit at a .438 pace while Grinnell, as a team, had a .212 efficiency.

Emily Brewer '24 added 47 assists and served two aces. Taka also had two aces. In the digs department, Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week Sophie Weber '25 tallied 25 and Jenna Keller '24 and Brewer added 10 apiece.

Grinnell shot out to a 12-5 lead in the first set before the Dutch rallied, going ahead 20-17. But Grinnell crept back and, tied at 22-all, Keller and Sullivan put down kills. After a Central point, Keller finished off the set with a kill.

After Central won the second set, Grinnell bounced back with five unanswered points to start the third. The Pioneers continued to roll, building their lead to 16-8 before Central rallied within 20-19.

Sullivan came up with two key kills and Central had a hitting error to push Grinnell ahead 23-20. After a Central point, Sullivan got a kill and Brewer an ace to finish things.

The Pioneers got out to an 11-4 lead in the fourth set and never looked back in sewing up the victory.

Grinnell has a Saturday ahead, playing nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College as well as Carleton College in the latter's triangular.
