Grinnell football team drops hard-fought opener to Lyon College

BATESVILLE, Ark. - Grinnell College's football team was hungry for a victory after traveling eight-plus hours to Batesville, Ark., to meet Lyon College in the season opener for both teams.

The Pioneers went into halftime leading 9-7, but the hosts rallied with 11 unanswered points on their way to an 18-12 non-conference victory.

Grinnell kicked off to start the game and immediately got a huge break when Lyon fumbled and Breck Bishop '26 recovered at the 37-yard line. On a fourth-and-goal play from the 5, quarterback Grayson Woodhouse '23 went right on a keeper, the hole closed up and he immediately took off to his left. Woodhouse outsprinted the defense and found the left corner of the end zone for the score with 10:19 left in the quarter. Grant Gerrald '27 kicked the point after to make it 7-0.

Lyon tied the contest at 7-all later in the first period but the Pioneers retook command when a snap on a punt by the hosts went out of the end zone.

Neither team scored in the second period, leaving Grinnell with a two-point lead heading into the locker room.

Lyon got a field goal in the third period to take the lead for good. The Scots added a touchdown and two-pointer in the fourth quarter for an 18-9 cushion.

Gerrald hit a 32-yard field goal with 28 seconds left to bring the Pioneers within six points. Grinnell had one last gasp with a well-executed onside kick, but Lyon recovered and ran out the clock.

Woodhouse completed 17-of-31 passes for 172 yards and also led the team in rushing with 43 yards. Nick Rhinehart '25 caught five passes for 47 yards, while CJ Readon '27 and Scott Nissen '24 each had three catches for 33 and 27 yards, respectively.

Defensively, Bert Greene '26 and Luke Walters '26 each had five tackles and Hugh Werner '25, Tim Johnson '24 and Brandon Tennicott '26 added three apiece.

Grinnell has its home opener next Saturday when Ripon College visits to open Midwest Conference play. Action begins at 1 p.m. at Rosenbloom Field.
