GC men's soccer team posts big rally, but comes up just short at Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's soccer team bounced back from an early two-goal deficit, but in the host Lake Forest College eked out a 4-3 victory in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Lake Forest (3-6, 1-0 MWC) shot out to a 2-0 lead through the first six minutes, but the Pioneers responded in stunning fashion to gain a 3-2 lead. Caleb Hoereth '24 scored his first goal of the season - and second of his career - in the 32nd minute on a corner kick assist from Oliver Northing '25 and then Soma Suzuki '25 found the back of the net with his first career goal just two minutes later to tie the contest. Samuel Gojjam '27 assisted Suzuski's goal as the score remained 2-all into halftime.

Just three minutes into the second stanza, Grinnell (3-3-2, 0-1 MWC) completed its amazing comeback with its third unanswered goal as Jaxon Willoughby '26 got his first score of the season to make it 3-2. The goal was the fifth of Willoughby's career.

But Lake Forest tied the contest with a goal in the 56th minute and took the lead for good with the match-winner in the 71st minute.

Grinnell shut out the Foresters in corner kicks by a 9-0 margin and the teams were nearly even in shots, with Lake Forest taking 12 and Grinnell firing off 11. Dylan Maddux '25 had two of Grinnell's shots and the other nine were spread among nine players.

Pioneer keeper Carter Benson '24 posted three saves.

Grinnell steps out of MWC play Sunday with a contest at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.
