GC football team starts MWC play at 2-1 for 3rd season in a row and makes history in the process

Juniper Schwartzman, 1st woman to play football at Grinnell, gets into the scoring act

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's football team started Midwest Conference play with a 2-1 record for the third year in a row, and made some history in the process.

The Pioneers rushed for a season-high 159 yards and Grayson Woodhouse '24 passed for three touchdowns as the hosts cruised by Lawrence University 34-16 on a warm Saturday at Rosenbloom Field.

The game saw a historical moment, as Juniper Schwartzman '27 became the first woman to play for Grinnell in a football game. Schwartzman capitalized on that opportunity, booting an extra point following the Pioneer's final touchdown in the third period (see video here).

Defensively, Grinnell was sparked by Kevin Johanson's '26 74-yard interception return for a touchdown. That marked the sixth-longest interception return in Pioneer history.

Woodhouse completed 11-of-19 passes for 170 yards and also led Grinnell's rushing attack with 63 yards. Garrett Wilson '25 caught four passes for 67 yards and a score, and Nick Rhinehart '25 had three catches for another score.

Tim Johnson '24 and Hugh Werner '25 each had 16 tackles and Keaton Fitzgerald '26 posted 10 as the Pioneers stretched their winning streak over Lawrence to three games.

Grinnell, 2-2 overall, put together a touchdown drive on the first series of the game, with Woodhouse rushing for 32 yards and Bennett Destino '27 another 23. Bradley West '27 carried 2 yards into the end zone for the score and Rhinehart kicked the point after.

Lawrence, 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the MWC, tied the game with a touchdown before Grinnell stretched its lead to 20-7 by the end of the period. Woodhouse hit Rhinehart with a 9-yard TD pass and Bennett Destino '27 had a 59-yard scoring catch from Woodhouse. Rhinehart kicked the point after on the first of those touchdowns.

Lawrence cut the gap to 20-10 midway through the second period, but Grinnell upped its lead a few minutes later when Woodhouse hit Wilson on a 38-yard scoring strike. Rhinehart had the pont after to make it 27-10 at halftime.

Johannson all but put the game away with 10:48 left in the third period when he corralled an errant Lawrence pass and scampered 74 yards for the touchdown. Schwartzman entered the game for the point after and split the uprights to make history at Grinnell.

The Vikings rounded out the scoring with a touchdown in the fourth period.

Grinnell travels to Monmouth College next Saturday.
