GC volleyball team loses 5-set marathon to Luther

ST. PAUL, Mnn. - While the result wasn't what the Grinnell College volleyball team wanted, the fight the Pioneers showed was on cue in a five-set loss to Luther College Friday night.

After winning the first set of its initial match at the Macalester Tournament by a 25-19 margin, Grinnell lost the next two sets 32-30 and 25-22 to the Norse. But the Pioneers bounced back in impressive fashion, winning the fourth set 26-24 and then losing a 15-13 heart-breaker in the fifth.

Grinnell reeled off 16 aces in the match, the third-best mark in program history for a five-set affair and 10th-best overall. Individually, Emily Brewer's '24 six aces rank seventh in program history for a five-setter.

Besides Brewer's ace total, Sophie Weber '25 tallied four. Weber led the team in digs with 24 and Brewer and Rachel Woock '24 had 14 apiece. Hayley Taka '26 and Keira Sullivan '27 each had 18 kills, with Taka hitting .326 and Sullivan posting a .280 efficiency. Millie Leonard '27 added 11 kills.

Grinnell (4-2) broke away from a 19-all tie in the first set with six consecutive points, five coming on Brewer's serve with the final three being aces. After losing the next two sets, the Pioneers were on the brink of elimination in the fourth stanza by falling behind 24-23. However, Sullivan pounded down a kill, the Norse had an attack error and Malaina Miles '24 recorded a kill to force a fifth set.

Grinnell broke out to a 3-1 lead in the fifth set before Luther (2-3) came back to win.

The Pioneers face Macalester College and the University of Minnesota-Morris on Saturday.
