Pioneer volleyball team drops pair of matches at Macalester Invite

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Grinnell College's volleyball team finished up the Macalester Invitational with a pair of tough losses Saturday.

The Pioneers opened the day with a hard-luck five-set loss to the host school. Macalester won the opening set 25-10 before the Pioneers bounced back to win the second 25-20. The hosts won set 3 by a 25-16 count, but Grinnell answered with a 28-26 victory in the fourth set. 

Macalester won the decisive set by a 15-7 count.

Jenna Keller '24 had 12 kills for Grinnell, while Emily Brewer '24 and Kylie-Ann Smith '27 had 20 and 19 assists, respectively. Keller and Emmy Nyquist '24 added two aces apiece and Malaina Miles '24 recorded five blocks. On the digs front, Sophie Weber '25 led the way with 24.

The Pioneers ended the day with a 25-20, 25-19 and 25-21 setback to the University of Minnesota-Morris. Hayley Taka '26 had 10 kills for Grinnell and Brewer contributed 24 assists. Keller added two aces and Weber had 21 digs.

Grinnell, 4-4, returns home to host Wartburg College on Tuesday. Action at Darby Gymnasium begins at 7 p.m.
