Pioneers bounce back from weekend loss by taking it to Beloit

GRINNELL, Iowa - After suffering a tough loss at Lawrence University Saturday, Grinnell College's men's basketball team was looking to bounce back in a big way Wednesday night.

The Pioneers fulfilled that mission, outscoring Beloit College 60-46 in the final 20 minutes on their way to a 108-93 victory in a battle of upper-division Midwest Conference teams.

While the snow fell outside Darby Gymnasium, Kai Te Huki '27 was pouring down the shots inside. He tied a school record with a perfect 12-of-12 performance from the free throw line and sank 9-of-19 shots from 3-point land while scoring a career-high 41 points.

Gabe Garcia '27 added 24 points and Jordan Lee '27 tacked on 14. John Vincent '26 and Zach Rosen '26 each had five rebounds while Garcia added three assists and three steals. Tolu Johnson '25 blocked a pair of shots, boosting his career total to 38 which ranks 15th in program history.

The Pioneers, who ran their home winning streak against the Buccaneers to seven games, remained tied for the MWC lead with a 6-1 mark. They are 11-3 overall. Beloit dipped to 4-3 in the league and 10-5 in all games.

The first half was tight the entire way, with Te Huki's layup just before the buzzer giving Grinnell a 48-47 lead entering the locker room.

Grinnell led by seven midway through the second half before delivering the final dagger, an 11-0 run to put the hosts ahead 84-66. Te Huki kicked off the run with two free throws and Garcia added two more. Max DeGeorge '25 came through with a 3-pointer, Garcia scored on a fastbreak layup and Sean Murphy '26 did the same to put the Pioneers on top by 18. They never looked back while cruising to victory.

Grinnell steps out of MWC play with a Friday matinee game against Andrews University. Tip-off at Darby is set for noon.
