Grinnell men complete first regular-season sweep of Ripon in 8 years with victory at Darby

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's basketball team completed its first regular-season sweep of Ripon College in eight years Saturday, tripping up the Red Hawks in a tight 95-92 battle at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell, which has won three of its last four, continued its best start for the program in more than 10 years with the victory.

The Pioneers rallied from a seven-point deficit midway through the second half with a critical 9-3 run. Ryan Tarighi '27 had three points in the run, while Kai Te Huki '27, John Vincent '26 and Jordan Lee '27 had two each.

It was a tight battle the rest of the way, with Ripon gaining a 92-91 lead with 1:07 left in the game. Tolu Johnson '25 answered with a big spree, first hitting a free throw with 57 seconds to go and then registering a steal. At the 37-second mark, Gabe Garcia '27 sliced in for a layup to make it 94-92. He was fouled on the play and promptly made the free throw to put the hosts ahead 95-92.

Ripon missed two field goal tries down the stretch as Grinnell came away with the victory. The win keeps Grinnell in second place in the MWC with a 7-2 mark while improving to 13-4 overall. Ripon fell to 3-6 in league play and 5-13 in all games.

Te Huki led the Pioneers with 27 points, Garcia scored 16, Tarighi knocked in a career-high 15, Lee tallied 14 and Sean Murphy '26 posted 10. Jackson Leone '25 and Lee added career-highs of 10 and eight rebounds, respectively.

Garcia contributed four assists for the winners, while Leone tallied four steals. Garcia, Johnson and Vincent all had a block. As a team, Grinnell's 24 steals marked a season-high.

The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday when Knox College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
