School record helps Pioneer men's swimming and diving team claim 12th Grinnell Invite title in a row

GRINNELL, Iowa - The host men's team stretched its Grinnell Invitational title streak to an even dozen Saturday night at Russell K. Osgood Pool.


Highlighted by Ethan Yuen's '24 school and meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke, the Pioneers finished the two-day event with 1,456 points to beat runner-up St. Ambrose University by more than 500 points.

Yuen cruised to victory in the breaststroke in 56.42 seconds, beating the school mark of 57.02 set by Will Lindell in 2017 and meet record of 57.36 by Garrett Cadotte of Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2017.

Kevin Fitzgerald '25 also established a meet record in winning the 400 individual medley. His time of 4:06.07 topped the previous record of 4:10.34 by Grinnell's Enrique Valero Ying in 2020.

Fitzgerald also won the 200 backstroke in 1:50.25, while Noah Tsukuda '27 claimed top honors in the 1650 freestyle in 16:32.65.

Grinnell added two titles in relays Saturday, as Rommin Adl '26, Yuen, Fitzgerald and Josh Sutton '24 won the 200 medley in 1:33.11 and Adl, Fitzgerald, Sutton and Yuen claimed gold in the 400 freestyle in 3:08.74. The medley relay team's time ranks sixth in program history.

Grinnell had five runners-up - Jacob Lester '25 in the 1650 freestyle (17:29.89), Toby Frick '24 in 1-meter diving (330.55), Tsukuda in the 200 freestyle (1:44.38, 16th in program history), Theo Mott '24 in the 100 butterfly (52.52) and Adl in the 50 freestyle (21.72).

Grinnell's third-place finishers were Adl in the 200 freestyle (1:45.28), Keely Yeager '27 in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.11) and Sam Larsen '25 in the 200 backstroke (1:57.58).

Benke Grobler '27 was fourth in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:15.38 and Adam Feilmeyer '25 placed fourth in the 200 backstroke in 1:57.82. Grobler swam 4:12.19 in the prelims, which ranks 11th in program history.

Fifth place went to Antoni Staszkiewicz '27 in the 400 individual medley (4:16.07) and Grobler in the 200 backstroke (1:58.48, 19th in program history). Harvey Wilhelm '24 was sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.81 and Yuen took sixth in the 50 freestyle in 21.99.

Staszkiewicz swam 1:57.94 in the 200 backstroke prelims, a time that ranks 17th in program history. Sutton went 52.19 in the 100 butterfly prelims, 10th all-time at Grinnell.
