Ripon women's basketball team pulls away from Grinnell to remain unbeaten in MWC

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's basketball team stayed right with Ripon College for a good portion of the first half Saturday afternoon before the Red Hawks pulled away for a 74-57 Midwest Conference victory at Darby Gymnasium.

The win kept the Red Hawks perfect in league play at 9-0 while moving to 12-6 in all games. Grinnell is tied for fourth in the MWC with a 5-4 mark. The Pioneers are 10-7 overall.

The teams went back and forth in the first period, with Ripon holding a 14-12 lead at its conclusion. Erin Lillis '24 forced a tie with a layup, and Grinnell later went ahead on Eva Carchidi's '24 3-pointer.

The Pioneers last held the lead at 23-20 when Nikki Ware '25 converted a layup with 6:04 left in the second period. However, the Red Hawks responded with a 17-2 run that lasted the remainder of the period and into the third.

Ripon was ahead 33-23 at halftime and kept it up in the third frame, holding a 55-37 lead at the end of it. The Pioneers punched into the lead in the fourth period, but it was too little, too late.

Lillis led Grinnell with 15 points and Carchidi scored 11 with the aid of three 3-pointers, pushing her career total to 58. That ranks 16th in program history.

Sara Booher '25 contributed eight rebounds and blocked a career-high six shots.  Ware added four assists and two steals, while Lillis also had two assists.

The Pioneers have another key MWC contest Tuesday when Knox College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
