Grinnell volleyball team posts 5th consecutive victory with 4-set decision at IC

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Grinnell College's volleyball team avenged last season's setback to Illinois College by taking down the Lady Blues Friday night in a four-set thriller.

The Pioneers, who won by scores of 26-24, 25-15, 23-25 and 25-23, remained unbeaten in Midwest Conference play at 3-0 while improving to 16-5 overall. Grinnell has won five matches in a row for the second time this season.

Grinnell featured a balanced hitting attack, with four players reaching double-digit kills. Jenna Keller '25 led the chart with 16 kills, Millie Leonard '27 and Keira Sullivan '27 added 12 apiece and Hayley Taka '26 put down 10. Keller moved past Claire Weidman to eighth on the Pioneers' all-time chart with 985 kills.

The Pioneers served a dozen aces on the night, with Gabby Choy '26 tallying a career-high five, Sophie Weber '25 adding three and Nicole Mlynski '26 getting a career-best two. Emily Brewer '25 had 45 assists and, on the digs front, Weber posted 30 and Keller and Brewer added 16 apiece.

The Pioneers showed resilience the entire match, something that became evident in the first set. Trailing 24-21, the visitors reeled off five consecutive points in a run that featured two kills by Leonard and ace by Choy.

Grinnell trailed the second set 9-6 before responding with a 13-2 run. Sullivan sparked the surge with three kills.

Illinois College, 2-2 in the MWC and 11-12 overall, eked out a victory in the third set and the teams battled on even terms in the fourth. With the set tied at 23-all, Taka put down a kill and the Lady Blues followed with an attack error to secure the win for Grinnell.

The Pioneers play another MWC contest Saturday, facing Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. The first serve is set for 1 p.m.
