Grinnell puts up great fight against unbeaten Lake Forest football team

GRINNELL, Iowa - The result may not have been what Grinnell College's football team desired, but the effort and performance could never be questioned.

Grinnell went toe-to-toe with an unbeaten Lake Forest College squad that is receiving votes for the national rankings before the Foresters came away with a 42-22 victory Saturday afternoon at Rosenbloom Field.

The Pioneers played their closest game with the Foresters in a decade and broke a five-game scoreless streak against the visitors.

Grinnell (1-6, 1-5 Midwest Conference) was outgained only 380-308 and held a 14-minute edge in time of possession. Big plays were the Achilles heel for Grinnell, as four of Lake Forest's touchdowns were for 25 yards or more.

Grinnell's Henry Baird '25 was 9-of-15 through the air for 50 yards before exiting with an injury. Will Cloake '27 came in and didn't miss a beat, completing 12-of-20 passes for 210 yards.

Lucky Carton '27 had a career-best 102 receiving yards on six catches for the Pioneers. Garrett Wilson '25 added 36 yards on three catches, while Nick Rhinehart '25 added three catches for 34 yards. Rhinehart now ranks eighth in program history for touchdown receptions with 13, ninth in points scored with 135 and 10th in reception yards with 1,535.

On the defensive side, Breck Bishop '26 posted eight tackles, Kevin Johanson '26 added five and Adam Whalen '28 tallied four. Bishop, Whalen and Travis Chu '25 all had a sack.

Lake Forest (6-0, 5-0 MWC) scored on its opening drive but fumbled on its next series, with Grinnell's TJ Lawrence '25 recovering at the Foresters' 12-yard line. On the ensuing play, Baird hit Rhinehart for a 12-yard TD strike. Rhinehart kicked the point after, boosting his career total to 45 which ranks seventh in program history.

The game was tied 7-all after the first period, but the Foresters erupted for 28 points in the second period and seven in the third for a 42-7 lead.

Grinnell finished strong, though, putting up 15 points in the final frame. The Pioneers recorded a long score to start things off, as Cloake and Carton connected on a 70-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline. Rhinehart kicked the point after.

Brandon Tennicott '26 set up Grinnell's final score with an interception in Forester territory. After a 13-yard pass from Cloake to Rhinehart, 13-yard rush by Bennett Destino '27 and 14-yard pass from Cloake to Charlie Greene '28, Cloake scored on a 3-yard scamper. He hit Rhinehart with a pass on the two-point conversion.

Grinnell takes to the road next Saturday to face Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
