GC men's soccer team dominates Augustana in non-conference battle

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - For the second season in a row, Grinnell College's men's soccer team stepped out of league play to dominate Augustana College.

The Pioneers doubled up the hosts 4-2 Saturday afternoon, spreading the wealth in the process. The four goals were the most Grinnell has scored against the Vikings since 1981.

Nick Fahmy '26 gave Grinnell a lead it would never relinquish just three minutes into the match, the first goal of his career. It was assisted by Billy Cherres '26.

Soma Suzuki '25 followed Fahmy's heroics with a goal just 19 minutes later for a 2-0 lead. It was Suzuki's first goal this season and fourth in his career. Oliver Northing '26 had the assist.

Augustana cut the lead in half in the 31st minute, but Anthony Hong '27 scored eight minutes later for a 3-1 halftime lead.

Grinnell added to its cushion in the 74th minute on Hong's second goal of the game - and season - and fifth in his career, with Dylan Maddux '25 providing the assist. It was Maddux's 22nd career assist, which ranks second in program history and is tied with Antonio Dimarco.

Grinnell owned the shots (14-11) and corner kicks battle (8-3). Hong had three shots for Grinnell, Zak Serby '25, Samuel Gojjam '27 and Fahmy all had two shots, while Ryan Huang '26, Demi Oni '27, Maddux, Northing and Suzuki had one shot each.

Jayson Kunkel '26 and Caden O'Neil '28 each played a half at keeper, with Kunkel posting two saves and O'Neill getting one.

The Pioneers are in action again Sunday, playing Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.
