Grinnell shuts down Knox for first Midwest Conference victory

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's soccer team rebounded from a loss to open Midwest Conference play by dominating Knox College 2-0 in another league match Wednesday at Springer Field.

The shutout, Grinnell's third in a row against the Prairie Fire, pushed the Pioneers to 4-3-1 overall while evening their league mark at 1-1. Knox fell to 1-8 in all matches and 0-1 in the MWC.

The Pioneer defense recorded its fourth shutout of the season, while keeper Peyton Dixon '27 had her third of the year while posting one save. Dixon's 15 career shutouts rank second in program history.

Rama Joshi '27 gave Grinnell the only goal it needed in the 14th minute, her first score of the season and third in her career. Following a throw-in from the left side, Campbell Swaim '28 - who had the assist - gained control on the left end line, spun around her defender and whipped a cross into the box. A hard-charging Joshi rushed the net and tapped a left-footed shot into the upper part of the net.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime before the Pioneers tacked on a goal in the 51st minute, Maya Mozena's '28 team-high third of the year on Ramona Delborne's '26 assist. Delborne caught up to the ball on the right side of the box, dribbled left and sent a low cross into the box. Mozena received the pass and quickly lofted the ball that bounced into the left part of the net.

Grinnell owned the shots battle 15-3 and took 12 corner kicks compared to none for the Prairie Fire. Delborne had five of Grinnell's shots, Mozena added four and Joshi took two. Others with shots were Maddie Beltramo '25, Reese Komsthoeft '25, Giada Bambi '25 and Katie Carson '25.

The Pioneers now begin a stretch of four road matches, beginning with a test Saturday at Ripon College.
