Half-dozen Grinnell women's tennis players claim titles at MWC Championship

MADISON, Wis. - A half-dozen Grinnell College women's tennis players notched titles at the 2024 Midwest Conference Individual Tournament Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Center.

Anika Sheth '26 was a double champion, taking top honors at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles. Other singles champs were Lily Perrin '25 at No. 3 and Addie Persian '27 at No. 6.

Utsah Kalra '25 teamed with Sheth in here No. 2 doubles title quest, while Kayla Surpless '28 and Keira Healy '28 won at No. 3 doubles.

Perrin and Kalra have each won four MWC individual titles in their careers, while Sheth is a three-time champ.

Perrin, the top seed at the No. 3 singles spot, rallied to beat the second seed from Lake Forest College 2-6, 6-1 and 6-0 in the title match.

Sheth, seeded fourth at No. 4 singles, also beat the second seed from Lake Forest in the title match by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Persian, the top seed at No. 6 singles, came back to beat the second seed from Lake Forest 2-6, 6-3 and 6-3.

Grinnell had the runner-up in the other three singles divisions with Erin Jarvis '25 at No. 1, Kalra at No. 2 and Alyssa Trapp '26 at No. 5.

At No. 2 doubles, Sheth and Kalra were the top seed and beat the fourth seed from Cornell College 8-4 in the semifinals and posted a victory by the same score against the second seed from Lake Forest in the championship match.

Surpless and Healy were seeded first at No. 3 doubles and posted an 8-0 shutout over a squad from Illinois College and then beat the third seed from Cornell 8-3.

Jarvis and Perrin finished second at No. 1 doubles. During the tourney, Perrin extended her program-record doubles victory total 74 while Jarvis gained her 60th career doubles win, which ranks ninth in GC history.

In singles play, Kalra now has 58 career victories which is 10th in program history. Perrin ranks 15th with 50 wins.
