Grinnell women's soccer sails past Cornell in MWC matchup

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's soccer team returned home after a long hiatus from Springer Field, and the team didn't skip a beat.

Grinnell shut out Cornell College 5-0 Tuesday afternoon, posting its highest scoring output of the season and its largest margin of victory over the Rams since 2016. The Pioneers, 4-1 in the Midwest Conference and 7-4-2 overall, have won four straight against Cornell, which fell to 1-4 in the league and 2-11 in all games

Grinnell fired off 24 shots, its highest total of the season, while limiting the Rams to just one. Defensively, the Pioneers garnered their sixth shutout of the season as goalkeeper Peyton Dixon '27 got the victory while making one save.

Ramona Delborne '26 and Campbell Swaim '28 were the offensive standouts for Grinnell, each scoring a pair of goals. Reese Komsthoeft '25 had the team's other goal.

Delborne gave Grinnell a lead it would not relinquish just 14 minutes in as she stole the ball from a defender and rushed in from the left side. She fired a shot, which was blocked, but recovered the ball and lofted it from just outside the box over the keeper's outstretched hands.

Swaim scored 13 minutes later on an assist by Emily Roesler '28. Swaim fed a short pass to Roeseler, who sent it back to Swaim. The Pioneer charged into the box and fired a left-footed line drive past the diving keeper.

The score was 2-0 at halftime before Grinnell came out on fire in the second stanza, as Komsthoeft scored just two minutes in on Delborne's assist. Delborne got the ball just in front of the keeper and sent a pass out to Komsthoeft, who blasted a shot into the upper left part of the net.  Komsthoeft has three goals this season and seven in her career.

Delborne made it 4-0 in the 70th minute with her second goal on an assist by Amelia Dueñas '26. On the play, Duenas took two dribbles and fired a perfect pass to Delborne, who was charging into the box. Delborne beat the keeper and tapped the ball into the net for her third goal of the season and eighth in her career.

Just three minutes later, a host of players were battling for the ball just inside the box. Swaim emerged the winner of the battle, and promptly sent a 17-yard shot into the net for her team-high fourth goal this season.

Komsthoeft and Delborne had five shots each for Grinnell, Swaim added four and Katie Carson '25 and Ella Hunt '26 had three apiece.

The Pioneers play their final home regular-season contest Saturday when Beloit College visits Springer Field for a 1:30 p.m. test. The contest will also serve as Senior Day for Grinnell.
