Pioneer women's soccer team punches ticket to MWC Tourney with late heorics on Senior Day

GRINNELL, Iowa - Some late heroics propelled Grinnell College's women's soccer team to its third consecutive trip to the Midwest Conference Tournament on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Springer Field.

Reese Komsthoeft '25 found the back of the net with just over five minutes remaining in the contest to help the Pioneers celebrate Senior Day with a 1-0 victory over Beloit College.

The Pioneers have now gone 33 matches in a row without losing to Beloit, dating back to the 1980s.

Grinnell improved to 5-1 in the league and 8-4 in all contests and sit just behind Lake Forest College and Lawrence University, who were each 5-0-1 in the MWC standings as of late Saturday afternoon.

Though Grinnell dominated the action throughout, the Pioneers had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. That all changed in the 84th minute when Komsthoeft beat her defender to the ball at the upper left corner of the box. The GC senior spun around that defender, pulled off a spectacular fake and fired a bullet past the Beloit keeper into the upper right part of the net. It was the fourth goal of the season for Komsthoeft and eighth in her career.

Peyton Dixon '27 was spectacular at keeper for Grinnell, posting her sixth shutout of the season and 18th in her career. She had one save.

Grinnell, which is 3-0-1 in its last four outings, outshot Beloit 11-2 including 8-1 in the first half. Maya Mozena '28, Ramona Delborne '26, Ella Hunt '26 and Rama Joshi '27 each had two shots, while Tessa Leahy '25, Komsthoeft and Campbell Swaim '28 added one apiece.

With the loss, Beloit's MWC Tourney hopes took a hit as the visitors fell to 3-3-1 in the league and 4-10-3 overall.

Grinnell travels to Monmouth College on Wednesday. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
