Grinnell stretches home unbeaten streak against Cornell to 16 with physical 1-0 victory

GRINNELL, Iowa - The streak continues.

Grinnell College extended its lengthy home unbeaten string against Cornell College to 16 matches Wednesday afternoon, coming away from Springer Field with a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

Cornell has not defeated the Pioneers in Grinnell since 1991.

The contest was physical throughout as the teams battled to a 0-all halftime tie. Grinnell broke the deadlock just seven minutes into the second half when Oliver Northing '26 scored his second goal of the season and 13th overall on an assist by Soma Suzuki '25. On the play, Suzuki battled two defenders for the ball on the right side. He beat them both and tapped the ball to Northing near the top of the box. Northing worked left, faked out his defender and delivered a perfectly-placed 22-yard bullet over the keeper's hands.

Grinnell, which owned the corner kicks battle 10-2, had four shots in the defensive-minded game. Northing had two of those shots, while Zak Serby '25 and Samuel Gojjam '27 had one apiece.

Jayson Kunkel '26 earned the shutout at keeper for Grinnell, his fourth this season and fifth in his career.

The victory was key for Grinnell in its hunt for the Midwest Conference Tournament, as the Pioneers improved to 2-1-2 in the league and 6-4-5 overall. Cornell fell to 2-3-1 in the MWC and 4-10-1 overall.

Grinnell plays its final home regular-season contest Saturday when Beloit College visits Springer Field. The Senior Day affair begins at 11 a.m.
