GC volleyball team celebrates Senior Night with sweep of Ripon, earns spot in MWC Tournament

GRINNELL, Iowa - Senior Night proved the perfect remedy for a Grinnell College volleyball team that had lost three matches in a row.

After honoring the team's five seniors prior to Friday night's match, Grinnell reeled off a three-set sweep of Ripon College to remain perfect in Midwest Conference play and clinch a spot in the league tourney for the eighth season in a row.

The 25-18, 25-22, 25-20 victory at Darby Gymnasium pushed Grinnell to 5-0 in the league and 18-8 in all matches. The Pioneers have now won six in a row against the Red Hawks, dating back to 2018, and have advanced to the MWC Tournament 13 times in program history.

Sophie Weber '25 became just the fourth Pioneer to reach the 1,500-dig mark for her career with a 24-dig performance. Jenna Keller '25 was also in double digits for digs with 12.

Keller led the Pioneers' hitting attack with nine kills, while Keira Sullivan '27 added eight. Emily Brewer '25 dished out 22 assists, while Keller and Brewer had three and two aces, respectively.

Grinnell trailed the first set 8-7 before going on an 8-1 run that included aces by Brewer and Keller. Grinnell kept it up and won comfortably. The teams were tied 20-all in the second set before kills by Keller and Ella O'Neill '25 gave Grinnell the lead for good.

The third set was also close, with the Pioneers leading 18-17 before going on a six-point run that included three kills from Keller and two by Sullivan. Ripon, 0-6 in the MWC and 8-16 overall, scored three in a row before Keller finished off the victory with a kill.

Grinnell hosts Lake Forest College at 1 p.m. Saturday.
