Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Pioneer men's hoops team blasts Alma for largest road victory since 2011

ALMA, Mich. - If anyone expected Grinnell College's men's basketball team to be down after Saturday''s loss at Kalamazoo College, they would be mistaken.

Instead, the Pioneers responded by blasting Alma College 124-79 Sunday afternoon to conclude a two-day Michigan road swing. The 45-point difference is Grinnell's largest margin of victory in a road game since winning 145-97 at Principia College 13 years ago.

Grinnell (1-1) rode a balanced scoring attack, with Kai Te Huki '27 leading the way with 21 points and Jordan Lee '27 adding 18. Also in double digits were Nick Lundy '27 with 16, Harris Dar '28 with 12, Strahinja Nikolic '27 and Sean Walser '26 with 12 apiece and David Bluder '25 with 10.

Big John Vincent '26 grabbed seven boards, Jordan Lee '27 dished out nine assists and Dar, Te Huki and Tolu Johnson '25 had three steals each.

The first half of the opening stanza was back and forth, with Alma (0-2) leading 32-31 with 8:32 left. The Pioneers were still ahead by just three at 40-37 at the 6:16 mark before going on an 18-2 run.

Te Huki began the spurt with a basket, Lunday sank a 3-pointer and Murphy made two free throws for a 47-39 lead. After a bucket by Alma, Lee made a 3-pointer, Nikolic scored from close range and Nikolic and Lee nailed consecutive treys for a 58-39 edge. Grinnell led 61-42 at halftime and continued to cruise from there.

Grinnell plays its first home match of the season Saturday when Principia visits Darby Gymnasium for a 1 p.m. match.
