Grinnell rally in overtime falls just shy as Central posts 74-72 victory

Booher reaches 500-rebound milestone with another double-double

PELLA, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's basketball team had a thrilling battle with Central College a year ago, and Wednesday night was a repeat performance.

Grinnell (2-1) led most of the way until the hosts forced overtime. In the extra period, Central (2-1) pushed its way to a six-point lead before the Pioneers rallied, only to fall shy as the Dutch escaped with a 74-72 victory.

bbGrinnell's Sara Booher '25 reached a major milestone on the night, becoming only the ninth Pioneer to reach 500 rebounds for a career.  It turned out to be a big night in more ways than one for Booher, as she scored a career-high 19 points and tied a career-best with five assists. She had her third double-double in as many outings with 12 rebounds while also blocking two shots.

Nikki Ware '25 scored 17 points with the aid of 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range, while Bailey Strovers '27 was 4-of-9 in treys while scoring a career-high 14. Strovers also had eight rebounds and Juniper Schwartzman '27 added a career-high five. Strovers and Nora Lynch '28 each had two steals.

The contest was tied 11-all after one period before Grinnell built a 25-22 halftime lead. The Pioneers really turned it on in the third period, twice going ahead by 10 as Cassidy Pak's '28 basket made it 47-37 and her 3-pointer made it 50-40 a short time later.

It was 50-42 at the end of the third quarter before Central made a big comeback, eventually going ahead 63-61 before Booher's layup forced overtime.

Central scored eight of the first 10 points of the extra period before Ware made two free throws and a 3-pointer from near the top of the key to bring the Pioneers within 71-70.

After Central sank two free throws, Ware countered with a layup to again make it a one-point game. The Dutch got an insurance free throw with 2 seconds left and held on from there.

Grinnell is on the road again Saturday with a game at Rockford College. Tip-off is 3 p.m.
