Huge comeback paves the way for Grinnell victory over Rockford

Pioneer women's basketball team off to best start in 9 seasons

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Grinnell College's women's basketball team used a huge comeback to secure its best start to a season in nine years.

The Pioneers trailed by 13 points at halftime and 15 early in the third quarter before charging back, eventually pulling even late in the quarter and leading by one entering the fourth. Grinnell (3-1) kept it up in the fourth period, building its lead as large as 10 on its way to victory.

Adriana Perez '28 erupted for 17 points for Grinnell, while Nikki Ware '25 and Bailey Strovers '27 were also in double figures with 11 and 10, respectively. Ware's 3-pointer gave her 100 for her career, which ranks sixth in program history.

Sara Booher '25 grabbed 15 boards to push her career total to 524, eighth-best in GC history. Booher also blocked a career-best six shots and had two steals. Strovers added eight rebounds and Perez and Cassidy Pak '28 each had three assists.

A basket late in the first period gave Rockford (1-2) a 42-29 halftime lead, and a bucket early in the fourth pushed that margin to 15.

From there, Grinnell began its comeback with two free throws by Ware and trey by Strovers to make it 44-34. After a free throw by the Regents, Strovers made two free throws to begin a seven-point run that also included a layup by Ware and free throw and basket by Booher to bring the Pioneers within 45-41.

Rockford broke the string with a basket, but Pak had a layup, Strovers a traditional three-point play and Perez a pair of free throws to put the Pioneers ahead 48-47.

Grinnell led 51-50 after three periods before Rockford got its final lead with a jumper to start the fourth. Ware followed with two free throws, Skylar Thomas '26 made a layup and Ware a trey for a 58-52 lead. Grinnell never looked back.

The Pioneers return to Darby Gymnasium Wednesday with a home test against Nebraska Wesleyan University. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
